Mar. 02 Public Speaking with Joel Rainwater

This week we started our public speaking workshop series. Joel Rainwater from New York Speech Coaching came in to do an interactive workshop for the students. He started off by having everyone go around introducing themselves. Although saying one’s name, grade and one thing about them is not difficult, the student’s lacked a bit of confidence. As the workshop carried on the students did breathing exercises and learned how to project their voice. After this part of the workshop the students did another round of self introduction. The students were able to project their voices and looked much confident this time around. After a brief break, the students played a series of games to allow them to speak up in front of their peers. Each round of game it was apparent the student not only enjoyed the game, but were much confident. During the last few games the student were able to speak confidently and with determination. Overall the students enjoyed and learned a lot during this workshop.

The students will be giving a speech during our KAYF Speech Contest on April 13th and the top 7 speeches will move on to the open speech contest on May 3rd. Please be on the lookout for our future events and join us.

Feb. 23 Mini Retreat

This week we brought together the students to enjoy a fun day getting to know each other and bond. Since we meet every other week, the student don’t have the chance to know each other very well. During our retreat the students are able to learn about each other and work in teams and learn to communicate, think critically, and have fun. The students played various games such as minefield, garbage, smaller ground, blindfold drawing and mafia. The students took time in between activities to socialize and interact with different students throughout the retreat. Most of the students felt they were able to bond with new people and had fun overall.
