Keynote speaker : MR. Robert Park
Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer, IEX Group
Rob Park is a co-founder and CTO of IEX Group, which operates the Investors Exchange – a new stock exchange on a mission to build fairer markets.
While working at the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), Rob and his co-founders on the global electronic trading team discovered an uneven playing field in the stock market. Seeing that inequality, they took on the challenge to level the playing field for long-term investors such as mutual funds and pension funds. Ultimately, the team decided that the best way to change the system was to build a new exchange from scratch, and departed RBC to build IEX. IEX debuted in 2013, and launched as a national stock exchange in 2016. The exchange now regularly matches over 200 million shares daily with a notional value of over $10 billion and listed its first company, Interactive Brokers, in October 2018.
As CTO, Rob oversees the full spectrum of the company’s technology functions, from the day-to-day management of the exchange, which processes over a billion messages per day, to the development of new innovative technology solutions to problems both in and outside of the financial markets. During his time at IEX, Rob has been recognized three times on the Institutional Investor Trading Tech 40 list for his role disrupting the trading ecosystem.
At RBC, Rob was the Head of Global Algorithmic Trading, focusing on creating client-facing algorithms and smart order routing strategies. Prior to working at RBC, Rob co-founded Quantera Financial Corp., a proprietary high-frequency trading firm that specialized in statistical and machine learning algorithms. Rob holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Computer Engineering from the University of Toronto.
The story behind the founding of IEX was chronicled in Michael Lewis’ 2014 book Flash Boys: A Wall Street Revolt.
